Art collectors should have their eyes and ears tuned to the Asian art market, as collectible works from the region continue to prove successful at auction.
This trend continued yesterday (March 23) at a Christie's auction of South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art, presenting 91 works from leading 20th-21st century artists from South Asia, India and Pakistan.
As we previously reported, Gestation, an acrylic on canvas painted in 1989 by Syed Haider Raza was among the most anticipated sales. It went to auction with an estimate of $600,000-800,000.
Depicting an arrangement of shapes and earthy colours mixed with the artist's trademark horizontal bonds, the work eventually realised an incredible final hammer price of $1,202,500.
It was sold to an anonymous bidder.
Works by leading contemporary artists such as Atul Dodiya and TV Santhosh also appeared in the Christie's sale.
