Just in: an original Salvador Dali
This original sketch by Salvador Dali features a female nude surrounded by various other figures, including a lady's head, a standing cat reading a book, and what appears to be a hare lying in a bed. It represents a typically chaotic Dali scene.
The nude portrait is believed to be of Dali's wife, and muse, Gala, and the accompanying provenance states the sketch originates from Gala's personal art collection.
The piece measures 8.75" x 12½" and has been drawn in pencil on a sheet of off-white card. Dali has signed the sketch in the lower right corner.
Dali's art has seen a surge of interest in recent years. In 2003, an ink and pencil drawing was sold at Sotheby's for $478,400.
The world record price for a Dali was achieved, amid recession, in 2011 when Portrait de Paul Eluard sold for £13,481,250 (approx $20m), again at Sotheby's, where it quadrupled the pre-sale auction estimate.
