Signed With the Beatles album makes $41,000 at RR Auction

Beatles memorabilia dominated at RR Auction, led by a signed copy of With the Beatles

A signed copy of With the Beatles has seen some of the highest bids in RR Auction's online sale, which closed on September 26.

With the Beatles signed album
With the Beatles went straight to number one in 1963, replacing their first album, Please Please Me, at the top spot

The album, signed by all four members of the band and in superb condition, sold for $40,726. A rare UK stereo first pressing, first cover edition complete with the original record, it is described by the auction house as "virtually nonexistent", such is its rarity.

The album was signed on December 7, 1963, a very busy day for the band, who had taped a special edition of the BBC's Juke Box Jury show that morning, before giving a special northern area fan club concert at the Liverpool Empire.

Following this, they went to the Odeon Cinema to give two more live performances, performing a 10-song set as part of the UK winter tour. The fan met the band backstage at the Liverpool Empire.

Paul McCartney's handwritten lyrics to the White Album song Why Don't We Do It in the Road? also fared well, selling for $36,100. With McCartney jotting a few lines of the song followed by a 2010 signature, the piece was originally donated by the Beatle to a charity auction in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Signed Beatles albums are exceedingly rare, and as time passes, they are becoming even scarcer. That's why we're delighted to offer a signed copy of A Hard Day's Night for sale, which is one of only 8-10 known to exist - far rarer than the 15-20 known fully signed With the Beatles albums.

Billy Joel Grand Piano
With Billy Joel known as the Piano Man, this is the quintessential piece of his memorabilia

The top lot of the sale was Billy Joel's personally owned grand piano, as seen in his 1978 BBC concert. A wonderful 1908 C Bechstein Model M, it is the same one that the original Piano Man toured and recorded with during the mid-1970s to mid-1980s.
