Andy Murray tennis shirt from US Open auctions for $13,500

A signed tennis shirt Andy Murray wore to claim the US Open this year has auctioned for charity

A tennis shirt worn by Andy Murray in this year's US Open final, as he ended Britain's 76 year wait for a male Grand Slam champion, has sold above estimate at a charity auction in the UK.

Murray, the current world number three, wore the Adidas shirt in his historic five set victory over Novak Djokovic in New York in September, to cap a superb year for the Scot, who had won Olympic gold at Wimbledon earlier in the summer.

The shirt sold for £8,500 ($13,687), 6.3% above its £8,000 high valuation last night (December 4), a testament to the player's new found popularity, helped in part by his emotional loss to Roger Federer in this year's Wimbledon final.

The shirt's desirability had been further enhanced by the player's signature in black pen and his letter of authenticity.

It has been a superb year for memorabilia connected with this year's Olympic heroes.

A 2012 Olympic torch autographed by Tour de France and Olympic men's time trial winner Bradley Wiggins made £13,000 ($20,500) this summer, while a complete set of score sheets from the Games' Heptathlon competition, won by Britain's Jessica Ennis, sold for £4,030 ($6,400).

All funds from the sale will benefit the Angelus Foundation, which aims to educate drug users on the dangers of taking both club drugs and legal highs.

A spokesperson for Kerry Taylor Auctions said that the head of the charity was thrilled with the result.
