Ali's Bugner-fight gloves set for Edinburgh auction
Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves from his 1973 victory over Joe Bugner will auction in September
Paul Fraser Collectibles, Thursday 9 August 2012
A pair of Muhammad Ali's bout-worn boxing gloves are coming to auction next month.
Ali wore the gloves in his 1973 points defeat of Joe Bugner in Las Vegas. They will arrive at an Edinburgh, Scotland auction on September 12 with a £10,000 high estimate.
We expect them to exceed this figure, such is the growing clamour for Ali memorabilia. The trunks Ali wore in his "fight of the century" against Joe Frazier in 1971 sold for $173,102 in November 2011, setting a new world record for boxing memorabilia at auction.
And Ali's trunks from his 1975 "Thrilla in Manila" fight with Joe Frazier made $155,350 earlier this month, just four months after auctioning for $100,000 - a 55.3% increase in value.
His signature is also on rise, having posted a 13.38% pa increase in value between 2000 and 2011, according to the PFC40 Autograph Index.
We have a signed photograph from Ali's meeting with The Beatles in 1964 available to buy now, while PFC Auctions' September sale will include the robe worn by Ali during training for his 1975 fight with Bugner.
The Edinburgh sale will also star a replica of the World Snooker Championship trophy, presented to legend of the game Joe Davis in 1949. It will appear with a £30,000 high valuation.
Paul Fraser Collectibles will bring you full results from the auction next month. In the meantime, why not sign up to our free weekly newsletter, to ensure you don't miss any of the key sports memorabilia news.
