Make way for the Scottish Colourists! That's the cry ahead of next month's Scottish Pictures Sale at Bonhams, where Samuel Peploe's Still Life of Mixed Roses in Chinese Vase will headline.
The work, painted at an important point in the Scottish Colourist's career, is expected to make £300,000 at the annual Edinburgh sale on August 20.

Bonhams' head of pictures Chris Brickley explains: "This transitional work, executed around 1920, has an arresting red ground and employs the typical cropped forms, flattened picture space and motifs which are hallmarks of his most characteristic pictures.
"Peploe's palette would become chalky and the colour more restrained after 1920 making this painting a fascinating and beautiful example of a key moment in his artistic development."
Lowly regarded in its heyday of the inter-war years, this most vibrant of movements has received greater recognition in recent times, with Peploe particularly in vogue.
His Flowers and Fruit sold for £512,800 ($835,510) at last year's corresponding sale, while the world record for a Peploe stands at the £937,250 achieved for The Coffee Pot, which sold at Christie's in May 2011.
The figures suggest that the estimate for the upcoming piece could be a conservative one.
