The robe which Amy Winehouse wore for the video to her signature song Rehab saw brilliant results in a Music Icons auction on June 23.

Winehouse's memorabilia has been subject to the "James Dean effect"

The robe, which is also worn by Winehouse on the single's cover, sold for $34,375 against an estimate of $15,000-17,000. The sale represents a 102.2% increase on estimate for the item.

Since her tragic death in July 2011, the troubled singer's memorabilia has experienced accelerated value at auction - a trend which collectors often refer to as the "James Dean effect". This effect has also been seen by Whitney Houston memorabilia, with her Grammy Award ceremony dress selling 309.6% above estimate for $20,480 in the same auction.

In a sale conducted just two months after her February 2012 death, another of Houston's dresses saw an impressive increase of 476% at the same auction house. Similarly, a recent auction of Pete Doherty paintings was topped by one piece which featured a self portrait by Amy Winehouse, created using her own blood.

Paul Fraser Collectibles is pleased to offer one of the Libertines singer's famous "Arterial Splatter" paintings, which has been autographed by Doherty.

The auction's highlight was expected to come from the sale of Elvis Presley's original crypt, but the jaw-dropping lot was pulled at the last moment following protests from his dedicated fans. The auction house stated it had postponed the sale until it "finds a plan that best suits the interests of the fans while respecting and preserving the memory of Elvis Presley."

The highlight of the Elvis memorabilia on offer was a motorcycle jacket and trousers owned and worn by the king. The Harley Davidson leather jacket was donated to the Memphis Salvation Army by his father Vernon Presley and was accompanied by the original typed letter Vernon sent to the charity in 1976. The outfit sold comfortably within its $30,000-50,000 estimate at $41,600.

The James Dean effect is perfectly exemplified by Michael Jackson memorabilia, which has seen an astronomical rise in value since he died in 2009.
