Jerry Garcia custom guitar sees $62,500 at Bonhams

Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia's custom guitar topped an entertainment memorabilia auction

The Bonhams auction of Entertainment Memorabilia including Animation Art was highlighted by one of Jerry Garcia's famed custom guitars on June 24.

Prices achieved by Garcia memorabilia are fuelled by loyal "Deadheads"

The $62,500 price matched that achieved by another of the Grateful Dead frontman's guitars at Bonhams in May this year. The May auction was solely dedicated to the singer, whose loyal fans, known as "Deadheads", always ensure strong results for his memorabilia at auction.

The guitar, dubbed Lucky Number 13, was only the 13th ever made by Alembic and is believed to have been used on Garcia's debut solo album. It was later gifted to Kingfish frontman Matthew Kelly, after Garcia starred as guest guitarist on his solo album.

All proceeds from the guitar's sale are to go to the Amicus Foundation, which supports children and families in Bhutan and Thailand.

The Garcia guitar was followed by a brilliant collection of Muppets drawings and ideas from Jim Henson. The nine sheets on offer were created by Henson in anticipation of a 1974 pitch meeting and featured the first appearance of the famous Miss Piggy, who at the time was named Piggy Lee. Complete with handwritten annotations from the legendary puppeteer, they sold for $35,000.
