The online sale featured a blockbuster selection of sports, celebrity and royal memorabilia alongside an array of unique items.

The gloves featured as one of the many highlights in the sale, having been worn by Clark during practice for his final Formula One race at the 1968 South African Grand Prix.

Clark went on to win the race, the last in an impressive string of successes that included 25 Formula One wins and two world championships. Just three months later on April 7, 1968, Clark died in a crash during a Formula 2 race at Germany's Hockenheimring.

The gloves came to the auction with superb provenance, having been accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Clark's mechanic Gordon Huckle.

"During the practice for this race Jimmy changed his driving gloves and gave me his old gloves. He was driving a Lotus 49/R4 and went on to win this Grand Prix and set a new lap record of 1min 23.7," wrote Huckle.

The lot included a 1968 South African Grand Prix programme, pit passes and a mechanic's armband.
