Charles Lindbergh Spirit of St Louis

Charles Lindbergh Spirit of St. Louis signed photo to auction

A signed photograph of Charles Lindbergh and the Spirit of St. Louis will auction later this month

A photograph signed by Charles Lindbergh just days after his prize-winning flight in the Spirit of St. Louis is to be sold at a forthcoming sale of aviation memorabilia, from May 17 to 23.

The aviator emerged from obscurity following his non-stop flight from New York to Paris in a single seat, single engine monoplane known as the Spirit of St. Louis. He rose to global fame for his exploit after being awarded the Medal of Honour and securing the $25,000 Orteig Prize.

The Orteig Prize was offered by New York hotelier Raymond Orteig to the first aviator to fly the daring route. Numerous unsuccessful attempts were made before Lindbergh completed the journey on May 21, 1927.

He was swamped with a crowd of spectators on arrival in Paris, where a tiny piece of fabric was taken from the material covering the plane's fuselage. That swatch is now mounted within the frame of the photograph and provides an exceedingly scarce piece of memorabilia from one of the most famous flights in aviation history.

Paul Fraser Collectibles is proud to present our own collection of Charles Lindbergh memorabilia, including this signed menu from a dinner hosted by one of the 80 cities on his flying tour of the US.

Another section of fabric will feature in the sale, this time from one of the aircraft of the Red Baron. The gigantic section of lacquered fabric was likely taken from the rudder of Manfred von Richthofen's aircraft and bears the iconic Balkankreuz or Iron Cross used by the German air force.

Paul Fraser Collectibles will be bringing you more exciting news from this sale in the next few days, check back regularly to make sure you don't miss out.
