€300,000 Bordeaux wine becomes 'most expensive auctioned bottle' in Geneva
A private Swiss collector went home with a rare bottle of the legendary 1947 Château Cheval Blanc
Christie's described the 1947 Château Cheval Blanc as "one of the greatest Bordeaux of all time" in the run-up to yesterday's sale (Tuesday, November 16).
The very rare six litre bottle went to auction with an estimate of $150,000-200,000 - and emerged as the most valuable bottle ever sold at auction.
In the end, the Cheval Blanc sold for $304,375 (SFr 300,996). Christie's were "absolutely delighted" with the sale, said a spokesman.
According to reports, the winning bidder was an anonymous Swiss collector.
The lucky buyer certainly has a good long-term alternative asset on their hands. It is thought that the six litre 1947 Château Cheval Blanc could keep easily for another 50 years.
