$212k for Michael Jackson's 'Holy Grail' glove

Worn for the TV unveiling of his iconic Moonwalk dance in 1983, it sold to a Hong Kong buyer

The "Holy Grail" of Michael Jackson memorabilia has sold in Hong Kong for $212,000, along with 80 other lots of the singer's memorabilia.

Jackson's most famous white glove, studded with rhinestones, was worn by the singer when he first unveiled his famous Moonwalk onstage in 1983.

The glove smashed its pre-sale estimate of $30,000 and was won by Hoffman Ma, 36, a Hong Kong businessman.

"It's the Holy Grail of Michael Jackson gear," said auctioneer Darren Julien of Julien's Auctions to the UK's Mirror newspaper.

The glove is completely different from others Jackson wore during the same period - a cream leather, off-the-rack golf glove with an interior label reading "Made In Korea". Uniquely, the glove is left-handed.

According to Jackson's 1988 biography Moonwalk, he hadn't time to prepare a proper dance routine for his appearance on the TV special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, taped on March 25, 1983.

Instead, Jackson quickly prepared a routine for his performance of hit single Billie Jean in his kitchen the night before in a last-minute burst of late night inspiration.

Jackson's moves included running a comb through his hair with his right hand; which is likely why this glove is left-handed unlike the other studded gloves he had worn over the previous decade.

The Motown 25 appearance also marked the TV debut of his iconic Moonwalk dance.

Also at Julien's, a strap and zipper laden black jacket worn by Jackson during his 1989 Bad world tour brought £135,000, over 20 times its estimate.

Other lots in the sale included handwritten lyrics, signed sketches by the singer, stage costumes and a set of fangs prop from Jackson's legendary Thriller video.

They were mostly snapped up by buyers from Japan and Hong Kong, according to the Mirror.
