€40,000 for a gold coin from two famous collections

Teutoburger's numismatic auction last week offered some excellent results

German auction house Teutoburger-Muenzauktion held an auction last weekend (May 28-29) offering an enormous number of rare gold and silver coins. The coin dated to the Siege of Danzig which we focused on did well.

The double-struck coin's surface depicts two lions holding Danzig's sign on a ball, whilst the opposite side depicts Jesus Christ holding an orb in his left hand. The words "DEFENDER" and "SALVATOR" are etched on the coin's surfaces.

Estimated at €10,000, the piece sold for an impressive €16,500. But it was not the top lot in the auction.

Gold coin which belonged to Ferrary and King Farouk

That honour went to a gold coin from a more recent time. The coin, in excellent condition, bears the marks of Duke Otto of Bavaria, who was the first king of Greece. Despite being marked as from 1832, it was manufactured in 1903 for the great collector Phillip von Ferrary.

Ferrary is most famous as a stamp collector, but he also collected coins at a level few succeed in. From his collection the coin passed to an even more famous coin collector, King Farouk, who once owned the 1913 Olsen Liberty Nickel.

Offered at €35,000 here, the coin achieved a full €40,000.
