Royal & Ancient Game of Golf comes to San Francisco

'One of the most magnificent books in the entire library of golf' is to sell for up to $15k

Sporting literature is a strong section in the world of rare books collectibles, and golf is particularly so.

On February 19 in San Francisco, an impressive range of books and other sporting memorabilia will be on offer as PBA galleries offers their auction of Fine Golf Books & Memorabilia: The Library of John M. McClelland, Jr.

Heading the sale is a copy of Hilton, Harold H. and Garden G. Smith's 1912 classic The Royal & Ancient Game of Golf.

The rare and highly desirable "Large Paper" first edition (in original full vellum) of this golfing classic is very well illustrated with photographs and prints of artworks.

"This is one of the most magnificent books in the entire library of golf, comprehensive in content, very handsome in appearance and attractively illustrated" according to golf history guru Joseph Murdoch. The guide price is $10,000-15,000.

Those interested in golfing memorabilia will be interested to know that a visor signed by Tiger Woods is currently available.
