Collectors set to scrap over $38,000 Bruce Lee handwritten signed letter

A 1966 letter written by the great martial artist could star at Dynasty Auctions in Hong Kong on August 6

A handwritten note by actor Bruce Lee is the highlight of 13 lots associated with the martial artist coming to auction in Hong Kong on Saturday, August 6.

The letter, signed "Bruce", was written in 1966 to friend Taky Kimura. It states that Lee was "looking forward for the TV series of 'Green Hornet' to come out so that Gung Fu will catch on".

The Green Hornet was a US television series starring Lee. It ran for just one season between 1966 and 1967 but was instrumental in shooting Lee to international stardom.

Decades on from his sudden death in 1973, Lee continues to enthral movie fans and collectors, as seen by the high $38,000 estimate for this rare piece of movie memorabilia.

Prior to his success in television, Lee had already made his mark as a teacher of his own invented kung fu style: jeet kune do. He would ultimately open three schools, in Los Angeles, Oakland and Seattle.

The Dynasty Auctions event includes a fur-lined jacket worn by the star in 1973 for a pre-production photo shoot of an untitled film he never got the chance to appear in, valued at $19,000.

W Wong Yiu-keung, chairman of the Bruce Lee Fan Club, told the South China Morning Post: "To the best of my memory, it will be the first such large scale auction of Bruce Lee's memorabilia held in Hong Kong."

The 13 lots are expected to make around $113,000 in all.
