Cowan's sells heirlooms from Abraham Lincoln's last male descendant

Collection 'may be one of the last great Lincoln caches not housed in a museum," says expert

Cowan's Auctions' June 11 sale will offer of an extraordinary group of Abraham Lincoln family artefacts that illustrate important facets of the family's history.

Highlights of the Lincoln family heirlooms include a rare photograph (estimated at $10,000-20,000) and a cheque signed by Abraham Lincoln ($10,000-15,000).

Two pieces of the official Lincoln White House china ($5,000-7,000 and $8,000-10,000) and a trove of family jewellery ranging in value from a few hundred dollars to $14,000 will also appear.

Several of the items - including a black parasol, fan and veil, belonging to Lincoln's wife Mary Todd Lincoln, are detailed on an inventory made at the time of their discovery in 1975 at Hildene.

In 1975, Hildene was the Vermont estate of Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving of the four children of Mary and Abraham Lincoln.

Jason Emerson, Lincoln scholar and author of The Madness of Mary Lincoln (2007) thinks that the items are "incomparably exciting."

"This may in fact, be one of the last great caches of verified Lincoln family materials not currently housed in a museum" he said.

The Cowan's American History Auction will also feature PT Barnum items, including Tom Thumb's clothing, Edgar Allan Poe collectibles, and Civil War archives and weaponry.

Meanwhile, Paul Fraser Collectibles currently holds another historic and valuable Abraham Lincoln autograph. It is currently for sale to collectors as part of our American Presidents Portfolio of exceptionally rare documents and signatures.
