Dillinger's gun fetches $95k at auction

Public Enemy Number One's Remington pistol fetches double the pre-auction estimate in Dallas

A Remington .41 caliber double derringer carried by 1930s bank robber John Dillinger has fetched $95,600 at auction.

Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas reported that the winning bid was more than double the pre-auction estimate.

The pistol sold on Saturday 25 June to a Los Angeles area collector.

According to the auction house, Dillinger was carrying the small pistol hidden in a sock when he was arrested in Tucson, Arizona 75 years ago.

Dillinger, who died in 1943, was declared Public Enemy Number One by the FBI after a string of bank robberies around the U.S. Midwest.

'Public Enemies', a Hollywood film based on Dillinger's life, has recently been released starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.  ____________________________________________________________
