Revealing the $94,163 'most valuable hockey trading card on the planet'

The 'finest Canadian hockey player of all time' - and a collector himself - has scored again at auction

The "Gretzky T206" Honus Wagner Baseball Card, one of just 50 extant from the series produced by the American Tobacco Company between 1909 and 1911, remains the world's most valuable sports trading card. It last sold for $2,350,000 in February 2007.

Famous owners of the card have included Wayne Gretzky, aka "The Great One" and otherwise known as the finest Canadian hockey player ever to have taken to the ice.

Today, aged 49, Gretzky still holds the National Hockey League records for goals, assists and points. He also led the Oilers to Stanley Cup championships in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988 before retiring in 1999.

With a reputation like that, it's no surprise that Wayne's own card is also sought after... The Wayne Gretzky 1979 O-Pee-Chee PSA 10 became the most valuable hockey trading card ever sold when it brought $80,000 in 2006.

Gretzky may be in retirement, but his collectibles are still scoring victories on his behalf - and also breaking sales records. Last month, US seller SCP Auction's online sale saw the return of the trading card it exaggeratedly billed as "the most valuable modern trading card on the planet."

While Honus Wagner's card remains the most valuable on the planet, that didn't stop the one-of-a-kind PSA graded GEM MINT 10 Wayne Gretzky rookie card from breaking its own record as the world's most valuable hockey card. It sold for a new World Record price of $94,163.

The card dates back to Gretzky's days as a rookie at Edmonton between 1979-1980, before the 18-time All-Star moved on to the Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers.

Say's SCP's lot notes for the card: "The youthful Edmonton Oilers superstar is sharply rendered and notably lacks the distraction of the usually seen dot-above-shoulder printing anomaly.

"Finally, the distinctive O-Pee-Chee 'rough-cut' edges, a pitfall aspect in many of the industry's lesser copies, reveal breathtaking, never-touched perfection."
