Rolex Paul Newman Chronograph to lead Dubai watch sale

The Rolex Paul Newman Chronograph dates to circa 1966

A circa 1966 Rolex Paul Newman model Chronograph (ref 6239) is valued at $120,000-180,000 ahead of its sale.

It will star in Christie's Dubai Important Watches auction on October 19.

The lot displays the rare "exotic" dial with three-dimensional graphics.

The model was popularised after actor Paul Newman was seen wearing one in a poster for racing movie Winning (1969).

The auction house explains: "Following their discontinuation, Rolex chronographs with "exotic" dials have become undisputed icons in the world of vintage watch collecting and part of the most prized trophies for astute collectors."

A 2016 Emmanuel Bouchet Complication One displaying a lapis lazuli dial is expected to make $50,000-100,000.

It features three separate dials (showing hours, minutes and seconds) and a unique escapement that moves the minute and hour hands forward every 15 seconds.

This lapis blue watch has been specially designed for Christie's.

A 1942 Patek Phillipe 18k gold chronograph (red 591) with a rose dial could make $45,000-75,000.

Christie's comments: "With a total production estimated to only 100 examples in yellow and pink gold, the timepiece is considered rarer than any other chronograph model of the period."

This specimen formerly belonged to a London based collector.
