Jimi Hendrix's acoustic guitar will headline an entertainment sale in New York

Jimi Hendrix's Epiphone FT 79 acoustic guitar will auction with an estimate of £80,000-120,000 ($99,401-149,102) at Bonhams.

It's set to headline an auction of entertainment memorabilia in London on December 15.

While he's associated most with electric Fender Stratocasters, this acoustic guitar was the one Hendrix used most during his time in London.

Hendrix bought it in New York in 1967, during the Jimi Hendrix Experience's first US tour, and brought it back to the UK with him.

Hendrix's former girlfriend, Kathy Etchingham, explains: "We shared the flat in Upper Berkeley Street with Chas [Chandler - Hendrix's manager] and Lotta [Chandler's partner], but had our own bathroom.

"Ours was fully tiled and had no window but a beautiful echo, a good sound that Jimi liked so he would sit on the loo and play!"

Hendrix didn't use an amplifier for fear of annoying the neighbours. He had already been kicked out of one flat after getting noise complaints.

Etchingham: "When working on a song 'Jimi would pick up and then play the acoustic, then pick up a Strat and play that unplugged, listening to it without an amp.

"He constantly played it to work out riffs and song arrangements including his own version of Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower'."

The guitar last sold for £62,000 ($77,136) in 2001, in a sale of memorabilia from Etchingham's collection.

Paul Allen of Microsoft is said to have bought the white Fender Stratocaster Hendrix played in his legendary Woodstock performance. The price? $2m.
