Janis Joplin's acoustic guitar headlines memorabilia sale

Janis Joplin played the acoustic guitar on her cover of Me and Bobby McGee

An acoustic guitar Janis Joplin played on her cover of Me and Bobby McGee was among the star lots of a sale at Heritage Auctions.

The song is included on Pearl (1971), her posthumously released final album.

It's one of her most celebrated recordings.

After Joplin's death, the 1969 Gibson Hummingbird passed to Big Brother and the Holding Company bandmate Sam Andrew.

Joplin (1943-1970) was one of the most distinctive voices of the 1960s. Her memorabilia is in high demand among collectors.

Last year her famous psychedelic Porsche sold for $1.7m at RR Auction.

Elsewhere in the auction, a signed copy of the Beatles' PS I Love You/ Love Me Do (1962) realised $30,000.

The record is one of a thousand or so first pressings issued on October 5, 1962.

The consignor provided a letter of provenance explaining how she met the band at a signing in a record shop on Merseyside: "I'm unable to remember too much about the occasion, other than there was a small queue - perhaps two dozen and that I had difficulty differentiating one group member from another, except for the short one, who seemed very jovial and laughed a lot - I assumed at the time he must be the leader!"

We're guessing she's talking about Ringo Starr, who was the shortest member of the group at 5'6" and certainly the most cheerful.
