What a valuable Penny Black looks like

If you want to own the world's first stamp, you can. Go on eBay right now. There are over 1,000 Penny Blacks on there.

All in varying states of distress. These things are not rare by any means.

Or ask any stamp collector. I mean any stamp collector. No stamp collection can be complete without at least one Penny Black in your album.

But if you strive to own a Penny Black that puts you in the top 0.1% of stamp collectors...

...That will elicit gasps from knowledgeable philatelists...

...And that can be used as a store of wealth for the years ahead...

You need to be a little more exacting. You need a sharp eye. And you need to spend a little more money.

If that's you, I have a Penny Black to recommend to you. It will cost you £10,000. It's in stock. And it's absolutely beautiful.

Paul Fraser Collectibles | Great Britain 1840 1d black, Plate 5, SG2A stamp to put you in the top 0.1% of collector

The 6 attributes of your £10,000 Penny Black

  1) Look at the bottom right of your stamp. A £10,000 Penny Black needs four large margins - lesser examples with only 2 or 3 on display are worth far less. The postmaster did a great job with the scissors with this one. Four large to colossal margins.

2) A £10,000 Penny Black will have all its original gum intact on the reverse. If a Penny Black is missing even a tiny amount of gum, its value will plummet. Luckily for you, your stamp has 100% original gum.

3) A £10,000 Penny Black will usually be mint (i.e never used). So it will have no cancel or any other sign of use. Your example is pristine, and never been used. Unused examples are far rarer than used Penny Blacks.

4) Look below the O of "ONE" in the bottom left. Hard to see on screen, but there is a slight double bulging of the base-line. This denotes it is from plate 5. That's good news - ideally you don't want a Penny Black from plate 6 (the most common and least valuable plate).

5) A £10,000 Penny Black will have been expertised by a respected authority. They don't come more respected than the Royal Philatelic Society. The confidence this piece of paper gives collectors adds thousands to a Penny Black's value.

← Your independent certificate of authenticity

6) A £10,000 Penny Black has to look fantastic, with a deep black colour. A stamp you can't take your eyes off. Your Penny Black is the kind of stamp you'd be proud to take home to meet your parents.

And by the way. You know how I've been calling this "the £10,000 stamp" throughout? I was fibbing. It's actually a £12,500 stamp. That's the Stanley Gibbons catalogue value for a Penny Black of this quality.

But I'm giving you a £2,500 discount.

But only, I imagine, if you're quick.

Until next time,

Paul Fraser
