Warhol The Scream

Warhol's '$475,600' The Scream screenprint set for Sotheby's art auction

Warhol's vibrant take on Edvard Munch's The Scream is to auction in London

The Scream (After Munch) is one of three Edvard Munch-inspired Andy Warhol screenprints coming to auction in London.

The three 1984 Warhols, which borrow motifs from some of the Norwegian artist's most iconic works, will auction at Sotheby's London on September 19.

Warhol’s take on an old classic

Warhol's The Scream (After Munch) makes some bold departures from the four late 19th century originals, depicting a more cartoon-like face, and substituting Munch's sober colours for his own vibrant purples and greens.

Sotheby's is anticipating the work to make up to £300,000, although such was the frenzy generated by one of the four versions of the Munch original at auction earlier this year, the price could go even higher.

The May sale raised the art auction world record by 12.6%, achieving $119.9m.

Madonna and Self-Portrait with Skeleton's Arm (After Munch) has the same estimate as Warhol's Scream, while Eva Mudocci (After Munch) is expected to achieve up to £150,000.

The works are among a highly limited number of prints Warhol produced in his Munch series.

This has been another strong year for Warhol, with his silkscreen of Brigitte Bardot selling for £3m in May, just days after his Double Elvis [Ferus Type] achieved $37m, 28.86% pa up on the last sale of a Double Elvis, in 1995.

We have a black sweater worn by the artist available to buy now - a wonderful item for any Warhol fan.

The Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints auction will also feature a Munch original. The Girls on the Bridge, a 1918 woodcut version of the famed work, and one of two woodcuts he produced of the piece, is expected to sell for between £180,000-200,000.

We will bring you full results of the sale later in the month.
