Scotch whisky exports to China spike 24% to $88m
China's growing passion for Scotch is good news for the UK's whisky producers
Exports of Scotch whisky reached an all-time high last year, according to new figures released by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA).
A growth in popularity among Chinese buyers was partly responsible, with exports to China rising 24% to £55m.
The figures are testament to the emergence of Chinese investors in high quality whisky, following the popularity for vintage wine in the country. China's economy grew by 10.3% last year, and the nouveau riche are clearly turning to alternative investments for their portfolios.
The US remains the world's largest consumer of Scotch, quaffing £500m-worth last year, a rise of 19%.
Overall figures were up 10% to £3.45bn, an improvement of 60% on a decade previously.

The chief executive of the SWA, Gavin Hewitt, commented: "Scotch whisky is a world class industry that consistently delivers for the UK. Global exports increased for the sixth consecutive year - contributing £109 a second."
Of the top 10 export markets, only Greece and Spain showed a dip in sales, a reflection of their current financial difficulties.
