Bonhams sells case of Romanee-Conti for $200,840 in its fine wine sale

At over $15,877 per bottle and $2,778 a glass, this coveted case will undoubtedly be well looked after...

Bonhams has announced that a case of Romanee-Conti from the 1990 vintage sold for £126,500 ($200,840) in the Fine & Rare Wine sale that took place at New Bond Street on September 8.  

At over £10,000 ($15,877) per bottle and £1,750 ($2,778) a glass, the case will undoubtedly be well looked after. The sale realised over £760,000, with particular interest in the older vintages on offer.  

Burgundy took the top spot; apart from the case of 1990, a case of Romanee-Conti 1988 sold for £74,750; both cases were bought by a European buyer. 

The Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is very clearly the leading producer in the region and the only one to have established itself as a major brand. The price of Romanee-Conti has shown, on average, a rise of 50% over the last year, according to Liv-ex.

With great international interest in the Domaine's wines, Bonhams will be offering further cases of both Romanee-Conti 1988 and 1990 in the Fine & Rare Wine Sale in Hong Kong, taking place on the 25th November.

Mature Claret went down particularly well in the sale.

A dozen bottles of Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion 1949 made £7820; four bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1951 sold for £3,220 (against a pre-sale estimate of £600 -700); and two cases of Chateau Batailley 1961 sold for £1,459 each (against a pre-sale estimate of £500-600). 

Meanwhile, a case of Petrus 1982 sold for £46,000, whilst a case of the 1975 vintage sold for £9,775. 

The proceeds from the sale of a case of Chateau Margaux 1958, which made £3,450, went to support Greenhouse, a charity aiming to empower young people in London's disadvantaged communities through intensive sport and dance programmes delivered by inspirational coaches.

Interest in older vintages also applied to vintage Champagne with two bottles of Krug 1928 selling for £1,265, over double the presale estimate, and a case of Bollinger 1961 for £1995.

Further sales from Bonhams will be held in London on October 20 and December 1 and in Hong Kong on November 25.
