A wine to end a war... Chateau Latour 1945 brings $72,000 at Christie's
The case was the top lot at their Lake Placid Lodge sale in New York over the weekend
Christie's has completed its 36-hour Hong Kong-New York marathon wine sale held April 9 & 10, 2011 with a combined total of US$11,183,838.
Let's look at the American half of the epic wine marathon first: The New York sale of Fine & Rare Wines Featuring Selections from Paul Mann and Lake Placid Lodge on April 9 achieved US$2.9 million, more than $1 million over its pre-sale low estimate.
The top lot of the sale was a case of 1945 Latour which sold for $72,000, the highest price realized for the wine since Christie's set the world auction record in 2007. Quite an investment.
Robin Kelley O'Connor, Head of Wine for Christie's Americas, commented,
"What a wonderful way to kick off the spring wine auction season here in New York. We saw very strong sell-through rates in the New York portion of this weekend's 36-hour wine sale marathon, with much cross-over bidding between our New York and Hong Kong sale clients.
"As expected, the market remains particularly buoyant for blue-chip Bordeaux and Burgundy. '82 Lafite was strong as always, but it was '61s that reigned supreme, with sold cases of Lafite, La Mission Haut-Brion, Latour and Haut Brion selling for high prices.
"The highlight of the sale was a sold case of 1945 Latour which sold for $72,000, the highest price realized for the wine since Christie's set the world record in 2007. We look forward to our next sale of Fine and Rare Wines on May 14 in New York."
