Bonhams toast to the success of fine wines and spirits at their September auction

The season began with a bang as the auctioneers enjoyed some impressive sales last week.

The first Fine and Rare Wine sale of the season took place at Bonhams last Thursday September 9 with the ensuing results proving the continued power and popularity of the wine market.

Once again, it was fine wine from the Bordeaux region that dominated the sale. Highlights included the sale of three separate vintages from the Chateau Petrus. A dozen bottles of the 1983, 1985 and 1986 editions, which each came from an extremely fine Belgian cellar, sold for over £7,000 ($10,750).

Lafite Rothschild dominated the sale

Elsewhere, bottles of the Chateau Mouton Rothschild sold well above their estimated price. A single bottle of the 1947 vintage sold for £1,150 ($1,770) against an estimate of £400 ($615).

While a 1973 vintage case of a dozen bottles sold for £2,760 ($4,240) against an estimate of just £700 ($1,075).

However, the top investment grade wine lots of the sale came from the famous Chateau Lafite Rothschild.  In truth they dominated the event with 50% of the top ten sales coming from the Chateau.

The highlight of this being the sale of nine bottles of the famous 1982 vintage which sold for £23,000 ($35,320) against an pre-sale estimate of £15,000 ($23,040).

Similarly impressive, a case of the 2000 vintage was sold for £17,250 ($26,500).

The event also highlighted the growing market for investing in spirits.

Vintage Cognac and port produced some truly impressive results with 11, 1980 vintage bottles of Dow port selling for over £500 ($770).

Champagne at the sale also saw impressive returns; two bottles of Bisquit Debouche 1868 Grande Fine Champagne sold for £1,380 ($2,120) - a massive 300% above their estimated price.

And two bottles of Veuve Clicquote 1966 more than doubled their pre-auction estimate to sell for £747 ($1,150).

Overall the event was a resounding success, adding further proof, if needed, of the ever growing potential of an investment in fine wines and spirits.
