1959 Chateau Latour tops Bonhams' Rare Wines at $9,800

Bonhams' wine sale was led by 1959 Chateau Latour from a renowned cellar

Six bottles of Chateau Latour 1959 sold as top lot in Bonhams' Fine and Rare Wine auction in London yesterday (July 5).

The six bottles sold as top lot, their values boosted by strong provenance

The Pauillac, which sold for £6,325 ($9,380), was taken from the fine Queen Anne cellar of Richard Greenwood. Also featuring from the cellar was a combined lot of one bottle of 1955 Chateau Cheval Blanc and a bottle of 1970 Chateau Mouton Rothschild which, in poor condition, sold for £345.

In a special jubilee-inspired lot, three bottles of Queen Elizabeth II's Pol Roger champagne were also sold. Dating to 1952, the year of her coronation, the bottles were specially selected to be drunk at the Queen's Silver Jubilee and were labelled: "Special Reserve for the Silver Jubilee of H.M Queen Elizabeth II in 1977". They sold for a combined £1,610 - a 23.8% increase on the £1,300 high estimate.

Elsewhere, six bottles of the illustrious Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1963 came in at £3,795. The bottles originate from the cellar of the late Baron Lambert, who had close connections with the Rothschild family.

The varied offerings also saw claret make a surprise appearance in the auction's top sales, with a dozen bottles of Chateau Angélus 1990, which formerly resided in a Belgian cellar, selling at £3,680.
