12 Chateau Latour world records set in $9m wine sale

A $9m wine auction in Hong Kong saw 12 world records for Chateau Latour on May 25-26

12 new world records were set for Chateau Latour at Acker, Merall & Condit's Hong Kong sale on May 25-26, which realised in excess of $9m.

The sale once again confirmed Hong Kong's voracious appetite for the world's finest wines, with a 90% increase on the combined estimates.

A collection of Chateau Latour featured as the centrepiece, having come from the cellar of a noble French family. The collection was noted for its immaculate condition, with all bottles left to mature with original corks, capsules, labels and cases.

According to the auction house, this remarkable condition is not even found in the cellars of Chateau Latour itself.

"The sensational offering of original and very rare Chateau Latour treasures spanning nearly a century witnessed an incredible bidding fervour," commented John Kapon, CEO of Acker, Merrall & Condit.

A case of 1945 Latour sold for $119,846, almost tripling its pre-sale estimate. This impressive increase was matched by a case of the 1961 vintage, which also made three times its initial valuation at $107,231. The collection achieved $1.8m, double the figure predicted before the sale.

The top lot of the sale was brought by a rare original wooden case of 1947 Chateau Cheval Blanc, which made $189,231.

The auction was one of three major sales in Hong Kong at the weekend, which saw a combined $19m change hands, and once again cemented Hong Kong's reputation as the world's biggest wine-buying hotspot.
