'Icemen Cometh' wine sale has 2012 off to warm start for Acker, Merrall & Condit

Acker, Merrall and Condit had a fantastic 2011, and its 'Icemen Cometh' wine auction looks strong

Tomorrow, January 28, Acker, Merrall and Condit will settle into their first fine wine auction of 2012. Playfully entitled 'The Icemen Cometh', the auction is filled to the cork with a well-mixed and inspiring range.

As collectors will know, 1982 was a tremendous year for wine, and two great lots from that year are on offer: 12 tissue-wrapped bottles of '82 Krug ($7,000-$10,000); and twelve bottles of the good value '82 Haut Brion ($7,500-$10,000).

Particularly fascinating is an instant horizontal of all the '82 Medoc First Growths - one bottle each of Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Mouton, and Haut Brion ($7,000-$9,000). It's hard to think of a better way for 10 friends to spend an evening…

Fans of large format bottles will be keen to get their hands on the six magnums of the 'Parker Perfect' 1997 Harlan Estate ($10,000-$14,000), and two classics are on offer in the form of 12-bottle cases of '90 Latour and '90 Margaux ($9,000-$12,000 each).

Perhaps less famous, but a world class wine nevertheless is the seductive '85 Giacosa Santo Stefano Riserva (12-bottle case, $8,000-$11,000).

The likely top lot, however, is a 1985 DRC Assorted Case ($40,000-$60,000). For Burgundy lovers, that dreamy mix of Romanée-Conti, Echezeaux and La Tache will prove absolutely irresistible.

Acker's auction takes place in Chicago with online bidding available. Having smashed any number of records in 2011, they will no doubt be looking to add to their tally in 2012. Watch this space to see how they do.
