Saint-Gaudens 1908 low-relief double eagle $20

1908 Saint-Gaudens $20 to feature among watches and diamonds

The ever-popular 1908 Saint-Gaudens $20 coin will attract strong attention on July 29

A low-relief version of the ever-popular Saint-Gaudens 1908 $20 coin will feature among an array of watches, rare gold coins and diamonds on July 29.

Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle 1908
The low-relief coin will be sold amid success for its rarer counterparts

The sale comes amid a series of auction successes for the high and ultra-high relief versions of the Double Eagle, with a particularly fine example of the ultra-high relief version soaring to $2.4m on June 29. Bidders will have the chance to own another ultra-high example in Heritage Auctions' August 3 sale.

The Double Eagle was first created by the famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, who wanted him to design a coin similar to those used in ancient Greece. Saint-Gaudens produced the coin as requested, though his first attempts were found to be impractical due to their high relief design, and lower relief examples were eventually issued.

The example at auction is one of the low-relief coins that made it into circulation and is far more common than the ultra-high relief coin. It is expected to bring $5,000-10,000, though its grading has not yet been disclosed.

Among the other coins on offer will be an 1875-CC $10, designed by Christian Gobrecht, that is estimated at $14,000-28,000. See Paul Fraser Collectibles' selection of investment-grade coins here.

The auction will also feature a huge 6.4-carat princess cut diamond, which has a cut grade of 9-excellent and will star as the auction's top lot at an estimated $158,500. This will be followed by a men's yellow gold Rolex Perpetual Datejust President watch, which will auction at $27,000-54,000.

We have this Longines Olympic Series men's watch currently on offer - a design classic from the Swiss luxury watchmaker.
