Andy Warhol

Unseen Andy Warhol works coming to Christie's auctions

Unseen Andy Warhols will feature in a slew of upcoming Christie's auctions dedicated to the artist

Andy Warhol buyers can look forward to a wealth of opportunities to add to their collections with previously unseen works, following a new initiative.

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts will sell a vast number of Warhol's works through Christie's over the coming years in an effort to raise money to support the visual arts, Warhol's stated goal for the foundation, which was established after his death in 1987.

The collection will include several photographs and prints never before seen by the public.

Joel Wachs, the president of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, commented: "These sales will provide unprecedented global access to Andy Warhol's work, in keeping with the artist's own democratising philosophy and working methods."

While investors currently holding Warhol items may fear a major influx of fresh Warhol material could devalue the market, we believe values will remain strong, particularly at the top end of the sector, such is the global appeal of the pop artist.

The announcement coincides with the release of information about Christie's November 14 auction, which will feature one of Warhol's famous depictions of Marlon Brando.

Taken from the publicity still for 1953 film The Wild One, the Marlon silkscreen ink on linen is one of several pieces Warhol produced of the star, and among four of similar 41 by 46 inch dimensions. It is expected to make $20m.

An exclusively online auction for Warhol will take place through Christie's in February.

The world record for the artist stands at $71.7m, achieved in 2007 by his Green car crash - Green burning car I from 1963.
