William Henry Buck landscape painting could show the way to $120,000 at auction

A range of art and antiques are going to auction led by a William Henry Buck landscape painting

Collectors of fine art and antiques are in for a treat if they can get to New Orleans this weekend as a Winter Estates Auction on February 4-5 will offer more than 1,100 lots along these lines.

The range of collectibles on offer is quite impressive, whether in origin or kind. To begin with, the auction will offer 18th- and 19th-century items ranging from decorative arts such as furniture, mirrors and carpets to the fine arts of paintings and sculpture.

An American Chippendale carved walnut chest-on-chest from the Delaware Valley will highlight the furniture section. Topped by a moulded broken arch crest, the chest on chest is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

A Baltimore tall-case clock can also be attributed to Chippendale and dates to 1760 like the chest-on-chest. Made from inlaid and carved mahogany, it carries a $25,000-$35,000 estimate.

The overall top lot is likely to be a landscape oil painting entitled School House by the Shore, Louisiana Bayou, by a William Henry Buck. In a period giltwood frame, it carries an $80,000-$120,000 listing.

Collectors on the lookout for Asian jewellery may be most impressed by a Chinese jadeite cabochon, diamond and 18-karat white gold ring. The mesmerising central stone of the ring is enhanced by the brilliant-cut diamonds and expected to achieve $25,000-$35,000.

Last but not least is a piece of antique militaria which is selling from its home town. Made in New Orleans, the fine Confederate staff officer's sword is in decent condition, though it looks like a weapon which has actually travelled rather than any sort of fretted-over presentation piece.

Marked "Dufilho / N. Orleans" and bearing a pelican insignia, it is expected to draw bids of $8,000-$12,000.
