Signed French furniture to sell among modern art in Texas auction

An elaborate display of French furniture is set to star among 20th Century fine art in an upcoming auction

A Texas auction house is to sell a detailed selection of French antique furniture in contrast to 20th Century fine art on April 25, 2012.

The striking antique furniture will provide an interesting juxtaposition to the modern art on display, with 17th Century cabinets featuring alongside the futuristic works of Carlos Cruz-Diez.

French Furniture
Carlos Cruz-Diez's Physichromie no. 511

The top-lot of the sale is a pair of Pierre IV Migeon corner cabinets, estimated at $175,000-$225,000. Each have a conforming rouge griotte marble top, over a serpentine door inlaid with gold curling vines. The elaborate pieces were commissioned by the Duke of Penthievre, one being stamped "Midgeon" and both stamped with "JME", the mark of the Duke.

The pair will be joined by a matching Louis XV commode, which has also been attributed to the Duke of Penthievre. The estimate for this item is set at $100,000-$150,000.

The Carlos Cruz-Diez piece to feature in this auction is entitled
Physichromie no. 511 and is characteristic of Cruz-Diez's work as an optical artist. A signed original dated 1970, like most of Cruz-Diez's art it must be seen in person to gain a true appreciation of the complexity at work. The stunning work is expected to make between £150,000 and $250,000.

Paul Fraser Collectibles reported only last week on the successes of French furniture in the US, with similiar items to feature in this auction, we expect strong results.

We are also pleased to present our own range of antique furniture, including this Goncalo Alves folio cabinet attributable to Gillows of Lancaster.
