Coca Cola 'Coke' sign from 1933 is a big draw in US Petroliana auction

A Washington sale is offering this rare Coca Cola 'Coke' from 1933 - a must-see for petroliana fans

Petroliana remains one of the most popular automobile memorabilia (automobilia) niches. The most coveted pieces tend to be associated with the so-called "golden age" of motoring in the 1950s. But pieces from the early-20th are also sought-after and particularly scarce.

And the more iconic they are, the better. Like this extremely rare Coca Cola 'Coke' sign advertising a "Service in Car". The sign is double sided, and dates to 1933.

The historic sign is auctioning in Takoma, Washington, and the auctioneer hopes that it could bring anywhere up to $10,000. That estimate seems a little high to us, but this sign will surely be worth a closer look for its rarity and iconic appeal.

Coca Cola's logo and, in particular, its drink bottles are among the most famous and recognised packages in the world.

Last year, a very rare prototype version of the first-ever Coca Cola bottle sold for $240,000 in a US auction. The bottle is one of only two extant, after all the other dozen or so prototypes made to designer Earl R Dean's specifications 96 years ago were destroyed.

Meanwhile, the rare petroliana markets continue to go from strength-to-strength. Sale examples include an AC Spark Plugs tin die-cut flange sign, dated 1936 and featuring the iconic "Sparky" logo, which recently sold for a new record price.
