Billy Bremner Leeds tracksuit coming to PFC Auctions on May 3

A Leeds United tracksuit top worn by Billy Bremner during the 1973-74 season is set to auction

A striking symbol of Leeds United under Don Revie, a warm-up top worn by Billy Bremner during the club's league championship winning season of 1973-74 is set to auction in May.

The Admiral tracksuit features the famous "smiley" badge first introduced in 1973, which in this case has been stitched upside down. The tracksuit also includes the name of the Leeds United captain on the back.

The iconic item has a £500 minimum bid and will be among the stars of PFC Auctions' online auction, which runs from May 3 to 24.

Voted the club's greatest ever player, the combative nature of the Scottish midfielder was seen by many as an embodiment of the Leeds United style of play during the 60s and 70s.

The tracksuits were just one of several ideas introduced by Revie to give the team an edge on the field and provide the club with a more family-friendly persona.

Revie changed the kit to all white in a nod to the hugely successful Real Madrid, and due to his belief that white was the easiest colour for players to spot.

He introduced numbered sock tie-ups, which the players would sign and throw into the crowd at the end of the 90 minutes, and also had the players boot branded footballs into the stands.

Revie introduced the smiley badge in 1973, having ditched the traditional three owls version for a slanting "LUFC" script in 1971, supposedly due to his belief that birds in pictures were bad luck.

Memorabilia from the Revie era is now extremely popular with football collectors.

A pair of Bremner's sock tie-ups from the shock 1973 FA Cup Final defeat to Sunderland sold for £352 at Sotheby's in 2001 - we would expect them to achieve significantly more today.

Bremner went on manage the club from 1985 to 1988. He passed away aged just 54 in 1997 of a suspected heart attack.

The PFC Auctions sale will also feature a slice of wedding cake from last year's marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, as well as several other superb pieces of memorabilia.
