Marc Newson's Event Horizon table could pull in $350,000

Furniture by the Australian artist known for his unusual concepts will auction in New York

New York auction house Phillips de Pury has announced the dates of the pre-sale viewings for its Design auction. The sale itself will take place on June 9.

Highlights in the auction include two works by the London-based, Australia-born industrial designer Marc Newson.

Newson is particularly well-known of incorporating "biomorphism" into his designs - characterised by smooth flowing lines, translucency and a lack of sharp edges.

An important early work: Pod of Drawers, 1987

Among the top lots in Philips De Pury's sale is his Event Horizon Table from 1992, a unique work crafted from enameled and polished aluminium.

The sculpture-slash-table is an artist's proof from an edition of 10, and the only example to be made with a yellow body.

Measuring 31 ½ x 70 5/8 x 38 inches, the table's edge is impressed with the words "MARC NEWSON EDITION EVENT HORIZON 1992" and a logo of the table's producers Pod Edition, UK.

From the Halsey Minor collection, the Event Horizon Table is estimated at $250,000-350,000.

If Newson's table isn't "out there" enough, Philips De Pury's sale will also include his important early work, Pod of Drawers, from 1987.

As the name suggests, the work is a pod with a fibreglass-reinforced polyester resin core, covered in blind-riveted sheet aluminium paint. The "Pod" measures 50 3/8 x 27 ½ x 17 ¼ inches.

From an edition of 10, plus two artist's proofs and one prototype, Pod of Drawers will auction with an estimate of $300,000-500,000.

The pre-sale viewings begin tomorrow in New York for collectors eager to see these works up-close, and will continue until the day of the sale.
