Chartwell Collection Cyprus Green block sells for $19,380

A Cyprus Green block of four was one of the stars of part six of the Chartwell Collection

A Cyprus Green block of four half-penny stamps was among the highlights of part six of the Chartwell Collection sale, which concentrated on specimens from the era of George V.

The rare specimen, with a left margin, and in fine mint condition, sold for £12,000 at the London auction on May 3.

The only detractions to the remarkable 1912-24 piece were some remnants of hinging.

Not far behind in the value stakes was a block of 24 one-penny perforated rose-red colour trials from 1912, which sold for £11,000.

Featuring the bottom two rows of a sheet, each stamp has been hand stamped with "Colour Trial E" on the reverse.

Produced with an imperforate King Edward VII stamp at the bottom of the sheet and bearing the Stamping Department's September 6, 1912 hand stamp on the front, the lot was a real rarity.

Two creases, down the centre and the right of the sheet, were its only faults.

A superb collection of four 1912 seahorse proofs was the auction's top lot, selling for £110,000.
