Premier League football shirts from first season to auction for $55,000

The Premier League football shirts from the inaugural 1992/93 season will auction on September 26

A collection of match-worn shirts from the first FA Premier League season go under the hammer on September 26 at Bonhams, UK.

Featuring a shirt from each of the 22 teams who contested the first Premier League trophy in 1992-93, they include those worn by stars such as Ian Rush, Gordon Strachan and Bryan Robson, who captained Manchester United to the first title.

Robson's shirt also bears 18 signatures from his teammates and manager, Alex Ferguson.

The collection, compiled by the former Queens Park Rangers chairman Peter Ellis, is expected to achieve up to £35,000 and will sell as a single lot.

Dan Davies, a sports memorabilia specialist, explained why hopes are so high. "This collection is like no other in the world," he said.

"It is unprecedented to have a complete set of shirts from a moment that is so important in sporting history and we are sure they will be greatly sought-after, with interest from buyers across the world."

Football memorabilia of the more affordable variety is up for grabs on September 19 in Kent, UK, when a lot containing a ticket from England's famous loss to Hungary at Wembley in 1953 comes to auction.

Jonathan Riley, from the auction house, comments: "I was fortunate enough to watch the game and was astounded by what I saw.

"The devastating 6-3 defeat, which could have been 10-3, shattered English football and radically altered team training, tactics and kit. Alas, to this day, English players still do not have the technical skills of the better foreign players.

"Myopia is still alive in the Premier League," he adds.

The lot also contains tickets from several other England matches. No estimate has as yet been provided.

Football memorabilia is an increasingly lucrative area of collecting. The world record for a football programme was set in May when the single sheet programme for the 1909 FA Cup Final between Bristol City and Manchester United sold for £23,500.

We have these remarkable mementoes from England's sole World Cup triumph.
