The boxing trunks Muhammad Ali wore at the 'Thrilla in Manila' in 1975 have doubled their estimate

The boxing trunks Muhammad Ali wore during one of his most celebrated victories have sold for $100,000 at an online auction, doubling their $50,000 estimate.

Ali wore the trunks during his 1975 win over Joe Frazier at the "Thrilla in Manila", the most high profile of the three bouts between the two heavyweights.

The trunks were previously in the possession of Ali's assistant trainer Drew "Bundini" Brown, and had also been signed by Ali.

The strong April 16 sale follows the recent world record for a piece of boxing memorabilia at auction; in November the shorts Ali wore in his defeat to Joe Frazier in 1971 sold for $173,102.

The satin finish robe he wore into the ring of his 1972 victory over Jerry Quarry also performed well, selling for $25,000, while a rare onsite poster of Ali and Foreman's 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" bout, one of just four known examples, made $10,000.

Muhammad Ali's signature is also on the up, a further indication of the power of the iconic figure with the paying public. The boxer's autograph has risen in value by 13.38% pa since 2000, according to the PFC40 Autograph Index.

We have a superb photograph of Ali with the Beatles, signed by the boxer, available today for £1,950 (approx. $3,050).
