Sir Paul McCartney's bass raises $64,000 for charity

The bass, signed by Sir Paul McCartney, will benefit a UK music therapy charity

A bass guitar signed by Sir Paul McCartney was sold on June 29 to raise money for Nordoff Robbins, a UK-based music therapy charity.

The auction was held at the annual 02 Silver Clef Awards, which was celebrating its 25th anniversary. Sir Paul has been an avid supporter of the event since winning its coveted Silver Clef award back in 1988.

Prior to the event, McCartney commented: "I am delighted to have signed and donated this very special left-handed Hofner bass in order to raise funds for Nordoff Robbins. The work they do with music therapy transforms the lives of vulnerable children and adults across the UK, and I hope the sale of this guitar raises lots of money. Rock on."

McCartney's trademark violin-shaped guitar sold for an impressive £40,000 ($64,000), with the overall event totalling more than £250,000 for the charity.

Whenever one of Sir Paul's instruments appears at auction, it is inevitably met with strong results. The last signed guitar to be donated to charity by the former Beatle raised £60,000, while the first guitar he ever used sold for £330,000 in 2006.

It is no wonder that investors are so keen to own a piece of signed Beatles memorabilia. The PFC40 Autograph Index reported a 14.33% increase in value for a Fab Four signed photograph between 2000 and 2011, with loyal fans continuing to boost sales decades later.

A poster from one of the Beatles' historic Cavern Club gigs sold 83.3% above its high estimate recently, confirming the band's perennial popularity.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a superb range of Beatles memorabilia here. For those looking for a truly unique piece of the Fab Four's incredible history, we have their first ever contract, signed by all members of the band and Brian Epstein - a document which changed pop music forever.
