Michael Keaton Batman

Michael Keaton's Batman costume could see $50,000 at auction

Michael Keaton's Batman Returns costume is up for grabs at a July 28 auction

The costume worn by Michael Keaton in the Batman Returns film is to be sold at a major US memorabilia auction on July 28.

Keaton's portrayal of Batman sparked the huge franchise we know today.

The sale will follow the long-awaited release of the latest Batman film instalment - The Dark Knight Rises - on July 20. Keaton's costume will be joined by Jim Carey's iconic outfit for The Riddler, which is estimated at $20,000-30,000.

Directed by Tim Burton, Keaton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) marked a long-overdue return to the big screen for the caped crusader and sparked the massive franchise that we know today. Drawing influence from Frank Miller's graphic novels, both films represent Batman's darker side, turning away from the comedic Adam West portrayal of the 1960s.

One of the most recognisable Batman costumes ever created, the sale provides an incredibly rare opportunity for discerning collectors to own the real deal. The complete costume will sell for $30,000-50,000. A ¼ scale model of the Batmobile will also auction with an estimate of $20,000-30,000.

All items in the sale originate from the Dreier collection, which is widely considered the finest assemblage of entertainment memorabilia in existence. July's auction represents part one of a series of auctions that will take more than two years to complete.

Elsewhere in the sale, the original Chewbacca head worn by Peter Mayhew is expected to make $60,000-80,000, alongside an astonishing selection of original Star Wars memorabilia. See Paul Fraser Collectibles' original props from the very first Star Wars film here.

However, the undoubted highlight of the collection will come from the complete costume which Michael Jackson wore on his record-breaking "Bad" world tour. Arguably the most iconic Michael Jackson stage costume, it has a pre-sale valuation of $200,000-300,000.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a brilliant Michael Jackson worn sequinned jacket, currently on offer at a fantastic price. See our complete King of Pop collection here.
