Whitney and Winehouse memorabiilia to star in US sale

A June 23-24 sale will feature memorabilia from tragic stars Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston

A US auction is set to offer a collection of personal memorabilia from both Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston on June 23-24.

Amy Winehouse memorabilia is currently experiencing the "James Dean effect"

The Music Icons and Sports Legends auction will showcase a huge selection of rare celebrity items, including a lock of hair from Elvis Presley, which has been preserved by his personal hairdresser. Paul Fraser Collectibles has a single strand of Elvis' hair of much greater value - it originates from the famous haircut he received when entering the army in 1958.

The auction's main attraction is expected to be supplied by the incredible range of Whitney Houston clothing and jewellery. Estimates for the dresses on offer range from $1,000 to $5,000, with the dress Houston wore for the 1986 Grammy award expecting the strongest results.

The last sale of Whitney Houston's clothing, which was held with the same auction house, saw a number of her dresses soar far past their estimates. With bidding fuelled by the singer's tragic death in February this year, collectors are currently snapping up Houston memorabilia for impressive prices.

This "James Dean effect" is also being experienced by Amy Winehouse memorabilia, following her death in 2011. The robe worn by the singer in her Rehab single is expected to sell for $15,000-17,000 at the auction.

A painting by Libertines frontman Pete Doherty, which was splashed with Winehouse's blood, sold for an impressive $56,222 in May 2012. Paul Fraser Collectibles is pleased to offer collectors the chance to own one of Doherty's original blood paintings, which has been autographed by the controversial star.  

The sports memorabilia section of the sale will be highlighted by a fantastic 1996 Olympic torch, signed by Muhammad Ali. The torch is to be sold in a lot including photos of Ali holding the torch aloft at the event's opening ceremony. It is expected to make $10,000-14,000.
