John F Kennedy hearse

John F Kennedy hearse makes $176,000 at classic car auction

The hearse that transported John F Kennedy's body to Air Force One was the star attraction in Scottsdale

The hearse that carried President John F Kennedy's body to Air Force One following his assassination in Dallas in 1963, sold for $176,000 at a Scottsdale, Arizona, US auction on January 22.

The vehicle transported the president's body from Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, to Love Field, where Air Force One was waiting to transport JFK's casket to Washington, DC.

"A Cadillac hearse like this would ordinarily be worth about $40,000 if not for its connection to the Kennedy assassination," McKeel Hagerty, president of classic car insurance firm Hagerty Insurance, told CNN.

Colorado-based property developer, Stephen Tebo, purchased the vehicle.

It will form part of Tebo's 400-strong classic car collection, reports the news provider.

The $176,000 figure is significantly more than the $120,000 achieved in 2011 for an ambulance of questionable provenance, said to have transported John F Kennedy's body from Air Force One to the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland.

It is a salient reminder of the importance buyers attach to unquestionable authenticity.

We currently have a rare two-seater 1970 Maserati Ghibli Convertible for sale.

The classic car was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the man behind the Ferrari 250GT and the Lamborghini Cala. To find out more, call us on +44 (0) 117 933 9503 or email info@paulfrasercollectibles.com.

The auction also saw a 1969 Chevrolet Intimidator 60 Camaro, driven by NASCAR great Dale Earnhardt, sell for $350,000.

It was one of 27 classic cars put up for auction from the collection of Jimmy Richardson, owner of Big Pop's Garage Museum in North Carolina.
