Jim Palmer Cy Young award

Jim Palmer baseball auction to feature Cy Young and Golden Glove awards

Baseball star Jim Palmer's memorabilia auction will feature three '$80,000' Cy Young awards

Baseball star Jim "Cakes" Palmer is putting his Cy Young and Gold Gloves awards up for auction on July 10.

The former Baltimore Orioles pitcher, who won three World Series, hopes to make up to $80,000 each for the three Cy Young awards he won in the 1970s as the league's best pitcher.

Two of the four Gold Gloves he won as the league's best fielder in his position are expected to each realise $15,000.

"At this juncture of my life, I would rather concern myself with the education of my grandchildren," commented the 66-year-old, regarding his decision to sell.

"I also have a stepson, Spencer, who is autistic and will need special care for the rest of his life. My priorities have changed."

A proportion of the profits will also be put towards an autism charity.

Cy Youngs and Gold Gloves are among the most prestigious personal awards available to players in the game, helping to explain why hopes are so high for a strong performance at the auction.

Roberto Alomar's 1996 Golden Glove award sold for $4,481 in August 2010.

The auction will also feature a Ty Cobb-used bat, which is already up to $81,208 in the pre-auction internet bidding.

2012 is proving to be a huge year for the growth of the baseball memorabilia market.

The earliest known Babe Ruth game-used jersey set a new sports memorabilia world record in May, when it sold for $4.4m, while the uniform Don Larsen wore to pitch his perfect game in the 1956 World Series will auction in December.
