Coca-Cola bottle lamp up 11.1% on estimate at auction

The $10,000 Coca-Cola bottle lamp was among the star performers at the two-day auction

A rare 1920s Coca-Cola bottle lamp has beaten its top end estimate by 11.1% at a Pennsylvania, US auction.

Featuring the original worn cap and gold metal embossed base, the item sold for $10,000 against a $6,000-9,000 valuation at a sale of more than 200 pieces of advertising memorabilia.

The lamp was helped to its strong price by its good condition and good working order.

The sale is confirmation to advertising collectors of the continuing attraction of Coca-Cola with buyers, and a reminder that condition is a hugely important factor in determining value - another example in a considerably worse state of repair sold for $3,000 in March.

Coca-Cola memorabilia was the star turn at the August 10-11 sale, with a 1930s Brunhoff Coca-Cola "please pay cashier" glass sign also selling well.

Complete with the original frame, back tag and a good portion of the back paper liner, the "very good plus" to excellent condition piece sold for $3,500.

An example of the popular Coca-Cola policeman sign from 1956 also sold. Boasting its original cast iron base, the unused example, which showed none of the wear so common with those exposed to the elements, made $3,750.

Away from the Coca-Cola items, a near mint condition, working condition Chiclets Stollwerck chocolate vending machine achieved $23,000 against a $15,000 valuation.
