Petroliana

Case Agency 'Old Abe' sign to lead US petroliana sale at $9,000

A sale of petroliana will be led by a rare Case Agency sign, starring company mascot 'Old Abe'

A sale of petroliana, or gas station collectibles, will be led by a rare "Old Abe" sign from the Case Agency on June 23.

Petroliana
Case Agency's mascot comes with a fascinating back story.

The auction is being held to coincide with the Check the Oil show in Dublin, Ohio. The event is an annual meeting place for collectors of petroliana and automobilia enthusiasts.

The Case Agency sign will provide one of the sale's highlights at $7,000-9,000. Rated 8.9 out of 10 for condition, the fantastic sign features the company's famed eagle mascot, Old Abe.

Aside from petroliana, Old Abe has a fascinating history of his own. Abe, a real eagle who was raised and traded by the Chippewa Indians, saw action in the American Civil War as a mascot of the Eighth Wisconsin Regiment. Upon hearing Abe's story, Case Agency's founder, Jerome Case, adopted the eagle as a symbol of his business.

Elsewhere in the sale, a framed photo of the US airship Akron is expected to bring $5,000-7,000. The image, which has been signed by the photographer Margaret Bourke White, was presented to the winner of a Goodyear tire sales competition in 1931.

Perhaps the auction's most exciting lot is a Texaco Easy Pour Can single-sided porcelain sign. The sign, which boasts great graphics, is noted for its condition. "This is the best example of this sign I've ever seen," commented the auction house. "It's rated 9+ and would be a 10 except for a few minor factory flaws."
