Oliver Cromwell (1599–1658) (PF7) signed document
Incredibly rare signed document circa 1650, featuring Oliver Cromwell's autograph
A bold ink signature signed by the Lord Protector circa 1650.
The signature is on a piece that has been neatly removed from the conclusion of a letter. The signature is very fine and clear.
Cromwell was an English Military and Political Leader best known for his role as Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland.
Cromwell was the third person to sign Charles I's death warrant in 1649.
On his death in 1658 Cromwell was buried in Westminster Abbey, but when the Royalists returned to power in 1660, his corpse was dug up, hung in chains, and beheaded in a posthumous execution.
Cromwell remains a very controversial figure in the history of the British Isles where some consider him a dictator, and others a hero of liberty.
However in a 2002 BBC poll he was voted one of the Top 10 Britons of all time, proving that he has stood the test of time.
Needless to say documents of this era are incredibly scarce; few have survived the 359 years in-between. To find a signature in this condition is very rare.
