Miracle on Ice jersey

'Miracle on Ice' jersey comes to auction with $37,023 low estimate

A 'Miracle on Ice' jersey from the USA's Olympic victory over the USSR is coming to auction

A jersey worn by one of the US "Miracle on Ice" squad is coming to an online auction in Canada, the first time a jersey from the historic game has appeared for sale.

Towering defenceman Ken Morrow has decided to offer the jersey up for auction, 32 years after the US squad of college players defeated the might of the USSR 4-3 in the Olympic tournament in Lake Placid.

The online auction, which ends on February 22, has a minimum bid of $37,023.

The US went on to win the gold medal with a victory over Finland.

The game has gone into US sporting folklore, and items connected with the "Miracle" achieve significant sums at auction.

Mark Wells's gold medal from the tournament made $310,700 at a US auction in 2010, far above its $100,000 estimate.

It was the first time a medal from the "Miracle on Ice" side had appeared at auction.

Morrow says that the decision to put the jersey up for sale was not a difficult one.

"I've taken it out over the past 32 years and into schools and charity functions and brought it out for friends and TV interviews," Morrow added to the Yahoo! website.

"For the most past, it's just been on a hanger in a closet for all these years."

Game-worn jerseys connect collectors with the greats of the game like few other examples of memorabilia. We have a match-worn England football shirt, signed by star midfielder Paul Scholes, currently on offer.

The online auction will also feature a number of other items from Morrow's collection, including his ticket allocation for that remarkable game against the USSR.
