Le Corbusier's Bogota leads in LA with 118.7% increase

A hand-woven Le Corbusier textile, entitled Bogata, led sales in an LA modern art auction, achieving $131,250

A textile from Swiss designer Le Corbusier starred in an auction of important modern art in Los Angeles on Sunday (May 6).

Entitled Bogata, the hand-woven woollen artwork came from an artist better known for his architectural works. Charles-Edouard Jenneret, or Le Corbusier, was dedicated to improving life for those in cramped city conditions through the creation of buildings but his talents also lent themselves to textiles, art and design.

This work, depicting abstract forms of Columbian musicians, achieved an impressive $131,250 against an estimate of $40,000-60,000 - a 118.7% increase. The work starred as top lot in a sale filled with modern greats.
Kinetic sculptor, George Rickey, brought the second highest bids with a piece created especially for the consignor. His 1962 stainless steel creation, Tidal IV, sold for $118,750 as part of the Property from a Santa Barbara Collection section.

Textiles also brought great results to the auction house, with Roy Lichtenstein's banner, entitled Thunderbolt, a highlight.  

The 1966 piece was produced by the Betsy Ross Flag and Banner Co, who are credited with making the first American flag. Bearing Lichtenstien's inimitable style, the striking piece sold for $87,500.

Another textile, an oil on linen work from Frederick Hammersley, achieved an identical sale price to the Lichtenstein work, against an estimate of $30,000-50,000. It starred as one of three works from Hammersley, which all sold well above estimate.
